Antiquities of the Ring of Kerry
Bolton, Jason (2008) Dublin. Wordwell Books.
The Ring of Kerry is wild mountainous landcape, dominated by mountain ranges cut by steep-sided valleys, cliffs, pockets, lgens and narrow passes, and a varied coast stretching from sandy bays at Ballinskelligs and Derrynane to high sea-cliffs and long sandy spits. The classic Ring of Kerry tourist trail passes through a rich archaeological landscape, and the book provides a guide to the most famous sites and monuments. Prehistoric sites include megalithic tombs and submerged landscapes, rock art at Derrynabla and Kealduff, Bronze Age stone circles, and the famous stone forts at Staigue, Loher and Cahergal. Medieval sites include the early Christian monastic sites on the Skelligs and Illaunloughan, Inisfallen Abbey and Muckross Abbey, the round tower and romanesque church at Aghadoe, the Anglo-Norman castle at Parkonavear, and other castles and hall-houses at Dunkerron, Ballinskelligs, Castlecove and Ballycarbery. The book is available from Wordwell.
