(forthcoming) Kilkenny: Heritage Council

The aim of this study was to evaluate the current condition of a sample of stone monuments in selected bedrock regions in Ireland. The research examined 96 monuments including megalithic tombs, rock art, stone rows and stone circles, stone forts, ecclesiastical sites (such as churches, round towers, ogham stones and stone crosses), medieval castles and fortified houses, and post-medieval built heritage including martello towers, signal towers, bridges, and lime kilns. The study examined the archaeological significance of each monument, the stone types found, decay forms and processes and the extent of biological growth to assess the nature and severity of risk.
